"The Croc Shock" is a story aimed at 8-10 year old readers (reading level 30-32) and will interest those children who like stories about wildlife.
Published in early 2008 by Aussie School Books Pty Ltd, and beautifully illustrated by Chris Dent, "The Croc Shock" is a chapter book chronicling the adventures of easy-going Jack Sherman, who takes a baby saltwater crocodile to school for Show and Crow Day. When Crook the Crocodile tires of being the star attraction and attempts to bite Jack's timid teacher, Jack finds himself in a huge mess. He has to talk his way out of trouble - in front of the entire school.

How long can you stare at someone without blinking? This is a game played by children all over the world. It's called a "blink-off".
In this story for early readers, published by Learning Media Limited (NZ), Jon is "The Blink-Master". No one can beat him at the blink-off game. He defeats his mate Pete, and then his sister Sally. When his bigheadedness is just too much to bear, Sally presents Jon with a challenger of a different kind who he simply cannot beat.
This story, beautifully illustrated by Ali Teo, was first published in 2005 as an anthology item before being selected for publication as a stand-alone book in 2006. Since then, "the little book that could" has been published in English for wide distribution in New Zealand, the South Pacific, the USA, has been translated into Spanish for the US market, and adapted in 2008 for teaching resources for the Singaporean market.
This book is only available from Learning Media (NZ), www.learningmedia.co.nz

Q. What do you call someone who's crazy about hot air balloons?
A. Why, a BALLOONATIC, of course.
Monty is crazy about hot air balloons so you can imagine his excitement when he receives a flight in a balloon for his birthday. Saddled with his annoying sister, Barbara the Barbarian, along for the ride, Monty gets to fly in the balloon - but the flight of his life turns into a fight for his life when the balloon's pilot collapses mid-flight. Can walking encyclopaedia on ballooning, Monty, land the balloon without killing them all?
This story, published in 2005 by Macmillan Education, and beautifully illustrated by Celeste Treloar, is one of my favourite stories. It's aimed at older readers aged 10-12 and will particularly interest boys and children who just love an adventure story.
This story is no longer available from the publisher, but I have copies available and many copies are in school libraries. |

What would you do if you found a dinosaur egg? Would you keep it, give it to a museum, or sell it to the highest bidder?
This is the dilemma facing Nathan and Ashley, who find a dinosaur egg on the beach one day. When the egg's existence becomes known and everyone seems to want it, Nathan and Ashley engage in a game of hide and seek, not knowing who they can trust. When the chips are down, help comes from a most unexpected source.
This story, aimed at 10-12 year old readers, was the very first story for children that I ever wrote. I was pregnant with my first child when this story came to life so it is as much "my baby" as my own daughter. It also has the distinction of being the first of my works ever to be accepted for publication in 2003 so will always have a special place in my heart, as will the publisher, Writers-Exchange, because the existence of this book has opened so many other doors for me as a writer. Published in 2005, this book is in e-book format and can be downloaded to computers as a PDF file.
