It has been a long-held tradition that when a couple marries, one partner takes the surname of the other. In most instances, the wife has taken the name of her husband. However, a few husbands have elected to take the  surnames of their wives, and in a small but growing number of cases, couples have elected to join their surnames together and both take new names.

 

Whilst it may be traditional to change names after marriage, it is not compulsory. There is no legal requirement for people marrying in Australia to change their surname/s after marrying.

 

All couples who book ceremonies with me receive comprehensive information about how to change surnames after marriage, and what to do to change names if a couple wishes to hyphenate their surnames and create a completely new name. Some enterprising celebrants charge their clients $50 or more to provide this information - my clients get it as part of the all-inclusive fee for my professional services.
